I use a lot of different criteria to determine my Top 50, which means that these songs are rarely ever grouped thematically in my posts. However, this particular set does happen to have a common thread: they’re all songs that I think were successful from both a musical and an artistic standpoint. The groups below have varying levels of commercial success – some are well-established, some are up and coming, and some are underrated. But whether or not those songs ended being “popular” among fans or the general public, I put them here because I felt they showed creativity and were a good fit for their respective groups.Continue reading
Okay, let’s get the obvious stuff out of the way: there are a bunch of boy groups in this post. Apparently, this is the part where I decided to put all the comebacks that have attractive men with intense auras. (Fortunately, the rest of the Top 50 will be more diverse!) I tried to be as articulate as usual, and not just write fancy versions of “OMG I love [insert group name here]” or “[Insert bias name here] is so attractive.” I think I did pretty well, but I’ll still warn you that the fangirl in me might occasionally take over. About a year ago, I kicked off this blog with my 50 favorite K-pop songs of 2016 listed by season. This time, I decided it would be fun to do an “official” ranking. So, I grabbed a set of index cards and wrote down all the songs I wanted to talk about… only to end up with 100 tracks instead of the planned 50. I change my favorites constantly, so I probably should have known how it would go. After all, this is what happens when you’re unapologetically multifandom. I eventually narrowed my choices down to a Top 50, but I decided to make the extra effort and do a “bonus” post. I wanted to share the other songs I liked, and it’s always important to promote good music!
October is one of my favorite months. It’s definitely fall, but it’s still the warm and sunny part (there was a week in Paris when the temperature was up to the mid-70’s ). The leaves are still on the trees and there’s lots of nice colors, and it’s just a very pleasant time of the year. It’s also one of the best months for K-pop! This month there were so many good releases to fit the mellow autumn mood, but there were also some fun and upbeat surprises.
Fall is one of the best times for K-pop because pretty much everyone makes a comeback. Like September, October saw the rise of some of the most talked about boy groups – who all delivered quality music. And though there was little to no activity on the girl group front, TWICE swooped in at the very end to remind us all why they’re the princesses of K-pop. There was so much going on to like, but here’s a look at the comebacks (and one debut) that really impressed me.
Being a Western K-pop fan can be frustrating if you want to go to concerts. Though more and more groups are embarking on world tours, usually “world” really just means “Asia and a select few other countries.” There’s an intense debate among international fans over which continent is truly the “K-pop desert,” but let’s face it: we’ve all got it rough. That’s why it’s so thrilling when you live in a minor city and a group you like decides to come to your own hometown.
April was one of those months where everyone and their mother had a comeback. There was so much music that it was definitely hard to keep up! For someone so multifandom as I am, it got pretty overwhelming. But the good part was that there was a lot of variety and that there was something for everyone. Though I stuck to the same few groups this month in terms of favorites, the ones that I chose had very different concepts and styles.
I’ve mentioned before that my main focus with SF9 is (or was) their dancing, because they’ve been pushed as FNC’s first male dance group. As long as their choreography is great, I was satisfied – I didn’t mind if other elements weren’t as interesting. But SF9 is pushing themselves, and “Easy Love” shows that they’re capable of much more than snazzy synchronized moves. In fact, this comeback has convinced me that they’re probably a group to watch out for.
