Though I consume a lot of K-pop (clearly), I don’t actually spend a lot of time listening to the same songs. I tend to really get into a group’s new single for however long they promote it, and then I file it away and move on to the next track of the week. So although I like plenty of songs, dozens even, there are only about 20-30 that I’ll listen to for extended periods of time beyond that initial release. For me, it’s an effective way to stay a general K-pop fan and check myself from getting overly absorbed into one or two groups. I call this part of the list the “Favoritism” section. That might seem a little weird since we’re basically halfway through the series, but it’s because I changed things up this year. I decided to allow more than two songs by my favorites groups because it was a more accurate reflection of what I really listened to, which means a lot of them have three songs that placed really highly. I use a lot of different criteria to determine my Top 50, which means that these songs are rarely ever grouped thematically in my posts. However, this particular set does happen to have a common thread: they’re all songs that I think were successful from both a musical and an artistic standpoint. The groups below have varying levels of commercial success – some are well-established, some are up and coming, and some are underrated. But whether or not those songs ended being “popular” among fans or the general public, I put them here because I felt they showed creativity and were a good fit for their respective groups.Continue reading
You might have noticed that I labeled this series of posts “Top K-pop Releases” instead of “Top K-pop Songs.” That’s because I believe there’s a lot more to a group’s comeback or debut than just the song. While the music should always be the main focus, there are so many other elements that can shape it. Because I often watched K-pop videos as much as I listened to the songs, I decided to take all these factors into account when making this list. It’s been a long and unexpected hiatus (5 months exactly – more on that in an upcoming post). K-pop is a fast moving industry, and most of the groups that I’ve chosen for this post have already made comebacks or are releasing new music imminently.
Just waiting on you, EXO BUT, I’m the type of person who tries to see things through no matter how behind I find myself. Leaving this post out would drive me nuts when I’ve already finished all the others. So, please join me on a blast back to recent past as I celebrate the songs that completely captured my heart in 2017!
This is probably the most personal section of my list. I tend to naturally follow the trends, so most of my Top 10 songs were really popular in Korea or internationally (or both). But interestingly enough, this second tier speaks a lot to my more individual tastes. Given the content of half of these songs, you could probably guess where my mind was at in 2017. But regardless of subject matter, these are all good quality tracks. This part of the list contains the music I had a soft spot for this year, the songs that I absolutely loved and listened to constantly when they came out. Okay, let’s get the obvious stuff out of the way: there are a bunch of boy groups in this post. Apparently, this is the part where I decided to put all the comebacks that have attractive men with intense auras. (Fortunately, the rest of the Top 50 will be more diverse!) I tried to be as articulate as usual, and not just write fancy versions of “OMG I love [insert group name here]” or “[Insert bias name here] is so attractive.” I think I did pretty well, but I’ll still warn you that the fangirl in me might occasionally take over. The songs in the last post ended up being pretty diverse, with lots of different styles and moods. This time, the majority of them happen to be really upbeat and catchy. There are a few that are more emotional and introspective, but I think it’s safe to say my preference for dance tracks will be more prominent from now on. We’re also going to see my love for a certain agency’s artists start to come into play (
I don’t do it on purpose, I swear!), but rest assured – I’m still committed to being as multifandom as possible!
It’s hard doing rankings when you’re multifandom. Your favorites change like clockwork, and you literally like everything. I’ve been stubbornly pretending I don’t have a new ultimate bias for a month now, because I’ve switched four times this year alone. The only thing that’s ever certain is that you want all your bias groups to do well. So while I want to honor all my faves in these posts, I struggle because I really just want everybody to be #1. But for the sake of this blog, I confronted my indecisiveness
for once. And I think I’ve come up with a Top 50 that best reflects my tastes as a multifandom K-popper.
