Katherine’s Top K-Pop Releases of 2017, Part Five: #11-20

This is probably the most personal section of my list.  I tend to naturally follow the trends, so most of my Top 10 songs were really popular in Korea or internationally (or both). But interestingly enough, this second tier speaks a lot to my more individual tastes. Given the content of half of these songs, you could probably guess where my mind was at in 2017.  But regardless of subject matter, these are all good quality tracks. This part of the list contains the music I had a soft spot for this year, the songs that I absolutely loved and listened to constantly when they came out. Though I may have occasionally taken a break or been swayed by comebacks from my bias groups, I always returned in the end.   Continue reading

Katherine’s Top K-Pop Releases of 2017, Part One: #51-100

About a year ago, I kicked off this blog with my 50 favorite K-pop songs of 2016 listed by season.  This time, I decided it would be fun to do an “official” ranking. So I grabbed a set of index cards and wrote down all the music I wanted to talk about… only to end up with 100 songs instead of the planned 50.  I change my favorites constantly, so I probably should have known how it would go. After all, this is what happens when you’re unapologetically multifandom. I eventually narrowed my choices down to a Top 50, but I decided to make the extra effort and do a “bonus” post. I wanted to share the other songs I liked, and it’s always important to promote good music!

MAMA 2017: Predicting the Winners

The MNET Asian Music Awards are finally upon us!  The week-long awards started in Vietnam this past weekend, with another show in Japan and the main event in Hong Kong.  After over a month of online voting, fans all over the world are waiting to find out which K-Pop acts will come out on top. Many categories are a head-to-head battle between EXO and BTS, but there are so many other questions to answer: Will all the recent hype over BTS in the US affect an Asian awards ceremony?  Will EXO manage to grab their fifth daesang for Best Album? With three comebacks each, will TWICE or Red Velvet be named the top girl group of 2017? And after enjoying years of favoritism, will any YG artists get recognized at all?  This year’s definitely going to be an interesting one.

[POLL] MAMA 2017 Nominees: Who Will Come Out On Top?

Awards season is coming, and the MNET Asian Music Awards (hereafter referred to as MAMA) is kicking things off with a bang! It’s only been two days, and my social media feeds are already filled with people discussing the nominations. As I write this, fans all over the world are diligently trying to get on MNET’s bugging website and vote for their favorites.  I’m multifandom, so I’m having a really hard time choosing. Also, my computer seems to hate that site. So I thought I’d do something a little different!

Favorites of 2017: July

I had my suspicions before, but July proved I’m heavily biased towards SM artists.  It’s more of a “I like their music/style” thing rather than a “SM is the best/blindly following the company” thing, but there it is. I always try to be diverse, since there are so many other groups out there to love.  But when Red Velvet and EXO both had comebacks this month, my preferences were clear. “Red Flavor” and “Ko Ko Bop” were by far my most played songs, and I was way more enthusiastic about them than anyone else.  But at the same time, I do think there were several groups that had quality music.

Favorites of 2017: April

April was one of those months where everyone and their mother had a comeback.  There was so much music that it was definitely hard to keep up!  For someone so multifandom as I am, it got pretty overwhelming.  But the good part was that there was a lot of variety and that there was something for everyone.  Though I stuck to the same few groups this month in terms of favorites, the ones that I chose had very different concepts and styles.

Favorites of 2017: January

I was expecting January to be a slow time for K-pop, but we still got a lot of great of music.  Female artists basically dominated this month for me.  A lot of my favorite rookie girl groups had comebacks, Dreamcatcher had a strong debut, Seohyun and Suzy released amazing music, and three of my favorite biases had an amazing collaboration.  Yet I couldn’t completely forget about boy groups – “Limitless” turned me into a major NCT fan.

Dreamcatcher Debut Review: “Chase Me”

Dal Shabet’s little sister group Minx has revamped and redebuted as Dreamcatcher. They’ve completely reversed their image, going from sexy-cute to dark and edgy. I have been so excited for this ever since their teasers started coming out. I love their name, I love their logo, and I love their concept.  It’s hard for me to tell how well their debut is received in Korea, but I personally think that they’ve made a strong entrance onto the playing field.
